June 16 Saturday

This week everywhere we went I experienced generosity and I enjoyed it. Everyone in Cherokee was very kind even if we didn’t belong to their culture. I was so amazed on how nice the Cherokee were not that I thought they weren’t but just because of their historical trauma that there is from the past. I really enjoyed being there this week because everyone was very nice and friendly. They were more than happy to tell us about their culture they were very open-minded. I really enjoyed interacting with this culture and learning more about them I also liked that we got to hear their side of this story because we do not get to see that in the books it is very bias. What I took away from being in North Carolina in Cherokee was to always listen to people’s story it was important to me. I totally agree with Victoria that people should not be judged by their actions and everyone has a story to tell. It is important to know the persons story before jumping to conclusions like we normally d

This culture encounters many problems just like others do as well. They have many patients suffering from substance abuse, diabetes, noncompliance, lack of preventative care, abuse, suicide, and lack of prenatal care. This culture has a hard time going to see a physician for care because many are still in their old ways and don’t want to go get care. It is difficult for some as well to be compliant with their medications especially diabetic patients. It is harder for them to control their diabetes because of the poverty and hard for them to eat healthy. Yes, I noticed that they have prevalent conditions in this community such as diabetes, cirrhosis, substance abuse, assault, suicidal ideation, and liver disease. This disease is related to possibly all the above genetics, culture, and deficient knowledge. I noticed that many of the patients that came in today talked about how they didn’t like to go to the doctor. It is related to deficient knowledge and some may not want to go

It was quite an experience learning and seeing how this hospital works together in the children’s hospital. I could tell how much teamwork they do to keep the flow of the pediatric unit running as smooth as possible. It is important for all of them to work together because working with a child is harder than with an adult. The children are scared so you need more help to help keep the child calm and educate him on what is going on. This hospital has many beds compared to my previous experience with a children’s hospital. I did like seeing the difference between one hospital to another. This hospital has family-centered care because they focus everything on the child and the family. They encourage family members to stay with the children and try to stay involved with their treatment. It is important for them that the children and families are aware of what is going on with the children.   The effects on children and their families is huge especially depending on what they are cur

Yes, we have learned some of the practices in this culture with childrearing. For example, children were raised to not speak the Cherokee language because it was frown upon before. When they were in boarding school they were not allowed to speak their Cherokee language, so they did not teach their children to speak Cherokee. The children learn to have respect for their elders and to learn from them. They are taught that they should look up to the older adults in the tribe. The elders have a lot for respect from all the community and they are respected because people look up to them. They are the ancestors of this community and they are very important to the community. They try to keep their culture alive and to pass it on to the next generation. The family structures I have observed in this community are the following: traditional, foster parents, adoption, and grandparents raising grandkids. I did notice that they don't have single mothers as often as it is seen i

The people do in this community do the tribal and the casino has a part in it. They get to vote on what is decided upon the community. They have a chief that oversees the tribal council.   The tribal council has a lot of power in the community but they all must come to an agreement that benefits all of the community and not just certain people. To them it is important to have everyone benefit from the health care system. They try to influence many to go to the health center. The members of the health care team are the doctors, nurses, cna's, dietary, respiratory therapy, laboratory, security, physical/occupational therapy, wound care, and psychiatrist. They are all part of the health care team that help try to make every patient feel welcomed and help them out by taking care of them. When someone arrives to the hospital and they need help they take care of the patient. They want to make sure the patient gets the correct care. They are very patient friendly and wan
My first impression of the environment in Cherokee is great, I feel like they are all very friendly and family-oriented. Which I grew up being very family oriented, so I can relate to them. They have a lot for respect for their elders, I think that is amazing and it should be like that everywhere. Everyone seems to be very open to having people come and learn about their culture. I like how even after the Americans taking their land from them, they still are welcoming to them. The environment seems to be all about giving each other support in the community. I think it is very interesting about this culture's history that after everything they have been through they are still willing to be peaceful with Americans. Even after the Americans took their land from them and killed many from the Cherokee tribe, they still want peace. They are very proud of their culture and still try to keep it alive with their own Native Americans. I feel after all they have been through they would
