It was quite an experience learning and seeing how this hospital works together in the children’s hospital. I could tell how much teamwork they do to keep the flow of the pediatric unit running as smooth as possible. It is important for all of them to work together because working with a child is harder than with an adult. The children are scared so you need more help to help keep the child calm and educate him on what is going on. This hospital has many beds compared to my previous experience with a children’s hospital. I did like seeing the difference between one hospital to another.

This hospital has family-centered care because they focus everything on the child and the family. They encourage family members to stay with the children and try to stay involved with their treatment. It is important for them that the children and families are aware of what is going on with the children.  The effects on children and their families is huge especially depending on what they are currently going through This families need support to help them get through what they are going. I liked that they had the child life to help the families and the patients.

The environment in Asheville, NC is a little different vs. Cherokee. I could tell the way they said certain things about the Cherokee hospital and how the attitude of some of the workers would change while discussing it. I can see that people have different perspectives on different things but does not mean people have to have an attitude about it. They also did say some good things about Cherokee as well, but I could tell that they have their differences. In Cherokee I can tell that they really care for their patients and want the best outcomes for them. They are very supportive especially with their patients that are struggling with substance abuse.

Today what stood out the most was how may beds they had at this children’s hospital and how they take all the children in the area. They are one of the biggest children hospitals in the Western part of North Carolina which is very significant because they have a huge responsibly to take care of all the children in the area. I also thought it was amazing they had a flight crew which is major in this area because if they have a child that needs care, they need to be picked up by them. It is amazing that they have a crew staffed to do that and I liked that she showed us the equipment that is used to go pick up the babies if needed to. After being in the NICU, it makes me consider wanting to work in that department.

  1. Yesenia,
One of the greatest aspects of Mission Hospital is, as you mentioned, having patient and family centered care. They do encourage the families to stay involved, for multiple reasons. Not only is it therapeutic for the patients to have that support, but being involved also offers support for families. As we have learned throughout this week, Mission Hospital and Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority (CIHA) have the commonality of such amazing support from the faculty, staff and community. Another commonality they share is the compassion for their patients and their needs. North Carolina loves helping their own. The biggest thing I learned from this trip was that Southern Hospitality is amazing!

  2. Phil,

I didn’t even think to post about how the facility worked together their teamwork was amazing! That hospital would not be able to run the same if their teamwork was not as great as it was. Their family dynamics were great, to involve the parents that much in the child’s care is so important it not only helps the parents feel better about the future care and I think it helps the patient increase their chances of getting better faster. Great post, thank you for sharing your insight.

  3. Yesenia,

I, too, found the flight crew very interesting. I also liked that they had their own private elevator to transport the patient to and from without running into people and traffic in the hallway. You discussed the differences between the attitudes of the Cherokee versus those of the staff in Ashville. While I agree the attitudes could change, I think Cherokee’s way of operating their healthcare system is much more effective than those of a more traditional system, like Mission.

  4. Yesenia,
Great point when saying the attitude of some of the workers would change while discussing Cherokee hospital. I thought that there was so many great aspect as well. I found it incredible to see that the employees get free dental, healthcare and eye care from just being employed there. I thought that there are many supportive individuals when some patients are struggling with substance abuse. It was a great experience that I was happy to be a part of.

  5. Working with pediatrics really terrified me after my peds rotation. Children are so fragile, and majority of the time they don’t hold back their emotions, or bite their tongue they simply don’t know how. I loved the team work I saw, it was amazing to see everyone work together for one cause. It’s so important to be able to work together sometimes people let their own personal issues interfere with the care of patients and that is something I just didn’t see at Mission Kids. I was glad to have this experience and it actually kind of sparked a little something in me to actually work with pediatric patients.

  6. Yesenia,
After visiting Mission Hospital and Mission Children's Outpatient I have a greater appreciation for the work healthcare professionals do to make sure that a pediatric patient has the most comfortable and stress-free visit. Although it is not possible to completely eliminate the stress, they certainly do everything in their power to reduce it. For example, at the outpatient clinic they had a section of the room that contained a doll that looked like it was about to go into a miniature MRI machine. Taking a child through the process using the doll is a wonderful way to prepare the child for what is to come, and to try to get them to understand in a way that they will follow.

  7. Yesenia,

The teamwork between the staff was very apparent and seemed that they worked very well together. Working with children can prove to be a very difficult task especially if they can not speak to tell you what is going on with them. I thought it was great that they had separate procedure rooms to facilitate smaller procedures. Having this ability allows the kids to have a sort of ‘comfort’ space within their room that that is not associated with pain or fear of the procedure. I agree with you in that the environment in Asheville was a little different than that of Cherokee. Asheville reminded me of some of the smaller towns back home and Cherokee made me feel that I was far away from home. Mission definitely has a huge responsibility as far as pediatrics is concerned because of their relative rural placement in comparison to other hospitals in the area. It was a great experience!
