The people do in this community do the tribal and the casino
has a part in it. They get to vote on what is decided upon the community. They
have a chief that oversees the tribal council.
The tribal council has a lot of power in the community but they all must
come to an agreement that benefits all of the community and not just certain
people. To them it is important to have everyone benefit from the health care
system. They try to influence many to go to the health center.
The members of the health care team are the doctors, nurses,
cna's, dietary, respiratory therapy, laboratory, security,
physical/occupational therapy, wound care, and psychiatrist. They are all part
of the health care team that help try to make every patient feel welcomed and
help them out by taking care of them.
When someone arrives to the hospital and they need help they
take care of the patient. They want to make sure the patient gets the correct
care. They are very patient friendly and want to influence them to come back
more. They want to show them they can be trusted so the patients come back to
get taken care of. They will try to make the patient feel as comfortable as
possible and build trust with the patient. Everything I have learned so far in
the hospital and from everyone I have talked to is that they want the Native
Americans to trust the health care. They will have the families in the room
because that will help the family support each other.
The differences in between this organization and our
organization back home are I feel like here they really have more time and make
more time for the patients. They care for the patient and the family, they show
that by having the big rooms for hospice patients with extra room for family
members to stay at and be able to talk to the physicians. They are very patient
center and I love that about this organization. I also feel like every staff
member is happy to work for this organization and enjoys coming to work I would
love to have something like that. The similarities in both organizations is
that they both have a game plan if anything were to happen. They are both very
well properly trained for any disaster that could occur. They train the staff
correctly for any emergency the Cherokee hospital has t stabilize a patient
before being able to send the patient out. Which is very important for them to
have all the special training they need.
Yes, they have complementary and alternative medicines in
their culture. I spoke with one of the nurses her name is Jennifer. She
informed us that they have acupuncture, aromatherapy, yoga, and herbal
medicine. They are very open-minded regarding this they want to try and help
the patient out and do whatever will help the patient feel better. For example,
the nurse told us about a physical therapist taking out some patients on his
break to go for a hike on his own time which shows that he cares for his
patients.

ReplyDeleteGreat post Yesenia. I see you putting the pieces together and beginning to understand the culture a little more in depth! What kind of barriers do you think there could be in regards to responding to a disaster in this area?
ReplyDeleteSome of the barriers to having a disaster in this area could be not having enough staff, transportation to a hospital more specialized equipment, and how rural the area is.
